Amazon to Shut Down Same-Day Delivery Service ‘Amazon Today’

Amazon will largely wind down its same-day delivery service, Amazon Today, by December 2, with select retail partners continuing orders until January 24, 2025. This service allowed customers to order directly from local brick-and-mortar retailers for fast delivery, but Amazon is now phasing it out to streamline its offerings.

A company spokesperson confirmed, “With our expansion of Same-Day and One-Day Delivery options, we’ve seen increasing overlap with Amazon Today. After careful review, we’ve decided to sunset Amazon Today, allowing us to focus on our primary delivery programs. Most of what customers purchase through Amazon Today will remain available with same-day or one-day shipping. In the U.S., Amazon now offers Same-Day Delivery across more than 120 metro areas, giving Prime members access to millions of items in 35 categories.”

Launched in 2022, Amazon Today connected customers with local retail partners through Amazon’s platform, using contracted Flex drivers for delivery. Partners included Office Depot, Petco, and GNC, providing fast fulfillment from their physical stores. Amazon will maintain Same-Day Delivery and select in-store pickups from Amazon Today partners until January 24.

About 175 employees working on Amazon Today were informed of the shutdown in a recent meeting. Most will be transitioned to other roles within Amazon, while those who aren’t will receive a competitive exit package with severance, transitional health benefits, and job placement support.

The decision aligns with Amazon CEO Andy Jassy’s broader cost-cutting measures, which have led to project discontinuations and more than 27,000 layoffs since 2022.

This comes during a busy period for Amazon, as it recently opened its largest U.S. warehouse, introduced AI technology to its new fleet of electric delivery trucks, and announced plans to add 250,000 full-time, part-time, and seasonal roles across its U.S. operations.
